WNYC COMPETITION GUIDELINES

RULES

CATEGORIES:

SOLO COMPETITION

  • Piano

  • Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Harp, Guitar)

  • Winds (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba)

  • Voice (Classical, Broadway/Musical Theater)

 

CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION*

  • Piano Chamber (1 Piano, 4/6/8 Hands)

  • Other Chamber (Duos to Quintets, any combination of Piano/Strings/Winds) 

 

DIVISION:

  • Piano & Strings: Grades 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12

  • Winds: Grades 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12

  • Voice: Grades 1-4, 5-8, 9-12

  • *Piano Chamber: Grades 1-4, 5-8, 9-12 

  • *Other Chamber: Grades 1-4, 5-8, 9-12 

 

*Grade Divisions are determined by the average grade of the participants in a chamber group

 

 

APPLICATION FEES:

  • Non-Member Fees:

    • Solo: $40

    • Chamber: $30 (per applicant)

  • Member Fees:

    • Solo: $35

    • Chamber: $25 (per applicant)

  • All chamber fees must be submitted together.

  • All fees are non-refundable.

  • Online payments accepted through Paypal.

REQUIREMENTS

VIDEO RECORDING:

  • Provide a link to YouTube, titled “Washington National Youth Competition – name, instrument, grade, state, name of pieces.” Videos will not be accepted if they are not titled accordingly. The piece information can be listed in the description box of the video if it does not fit in the title.

  • The video being submitted may be made anytime between 2016-2019, as long as the participant was in the same grade division during the time of recording as they are applying for the competition.

  • Participants’ face and hands, as well as keyboard/instrument, must be visible for the entirety of the video.

  • Memorization is required for Piano and Strings categories. Other instruments/categories are encouraged to play from memorization, but it is not required.

  • Video recording MUST be a one-take; editing, such as cutting and merging multiple takes, is prohibited.

  • Unaccompanied music may be submitted; however, if the piece has a written accompanist part, then an accompanist will be required.

  • Formal and appropriate attire must be worn, otherwise the video will not be accepted.

  • Time length of the video performance MUST adhere to the time limits listed above. Participants will make necessary cuts or adjustments to their pieces accordingly.

PIECE REQUIREMENT:

Solo Piano/Solo Strings/Solo Winds/Chamber Music:

  • One or two pieces of contrasting styles/periods

  • Time Limits

    • Grades 1-4: up to 5 minutes

    • Grades 5-6: up to 6 minutes

    • Grades 7-10: up to 10 minutes

    • Grades 11-12: up to 12 minutes

Voice:

  • Classical - 2 art songs (2 different languages)

  • Broadway/Musical Theater - 2 songs of choice

  • Time Limits

    • All grades: up to 5 minutes

RESULTS

RESULTS:

 

  • Results will be announced June 2, 2019. Judge decisions are final, no exceptions.

  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention prize winners within each division in each category will be chosen.

  • Judges’ comments will be sent via email.

 

 

WINNERS' CONCERT:

  • All 1st Prize Winners and only first prize winners will be invited to a Winners’ Concert (date & location TBA). They will be responsible for their own accommodation and travel expenses.

 

 

SPECIAL AWARD:

  • Best Performer Award Winners will receive plaques commemorating their achievement in the Washington National Youth Music Competition.

  • The Washington National Youth Music Competition will select 1-4 BEST PERFORMER(S) of 2019 out of the first prize winners (chosen from each division in each category) and give out one of the following awards:

    • Cash Scholarship

      • OR

    • Invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall on July 6, 2019 1:00 pm.

  • The invited Best Performer winner(s) will be responsible for their own accommodation and travel expenses.

 

**Performing piece will be limited to 7 minutes in length, instead of 10 minutes, for Best Performers in Grades 7-12

** Completed online applications, video submissions, and paypal payments must be submitted by May 22, 2019. Application fees are non-refundable.
